In Place Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard to Enterprise Upgrade
Using DISM you are able to do an in place upgrade to a different version of the OS. Below are the steps required to do so.
3. Set the edition you want and key you are assigned for the enterprise edition.

Problems:
If you receive ” The specified product key is not valid for the target edition. “ Verify the information is typed correctly. If you still receive the error upgrade with a temporary key from Microsoft 489J6-VHDMP-X63PK-3K798-CPX3Y and then once upgraded log in and activate with your key. I was able to get mine to successfully register after a couple tries.

it worked perfectly!!! I had to use the temporary key too, but after rebooting I was able to enter the real key. It took me 15 minutes! Thanx a lot!.

Hi,
Thanks for your help Jamie, it saved me a big amount of time.
And I’ve also used your temporary key.
Cheers

Also thanks from me Jamie!
The upgrade wasn’t accepting my MSDN key. The temp key did the trick and I then replaced the temp key with my MSDN key after rebooting. It worked perfectly.

Thanks Jamie!
That worked like a charm … even had to use that temporary key you provided because it wouldn’t accept the real one for the upgrade, but after the reboot all I had to do was go into Computer -> Properties, click “Change product key”, put in the good key and that was that.
The whole ordeal took about 10 minutes.

I try this and receive an error:
Setting an Edition is not supported with online images.
You can not do an inline upgrade if the server is a DC. You will need to demote the server first, run the upgrade and then re-promote it again.

I never tried it on a DC but that’s good to know.
